PRIME MONTESSORI ACADEMY
Atelier Shelter-in-Place Readiness
A Protocol for Calm Protection & Collective Safety
At Prime Montessori Academy, safety is upheld through preparation, clarity, and composure. A shelter-in-place response is not a moment of fear — it is a moment of quiet coordination, guided by trained adults who protect the child’s sense of security above all else.
This protocol outlines how we safeguard physical well-being while preserving emotional steadiness, dignity, and trust for every child in our care.
What Shelter-in-Place Means at Prime
A shelter-in-place procedure is enacted when it is safest for the community to remain indoors due to external conditions or guidance from local authorities.
During shelter-in-place:
Children remain within their familiar atelier
Adults lead with calm authority and reassurance
The day’s rhythm is gently adapted, not disrupted
Safety is maintained without alarm or urgency
Adult Posture & Leadership
When shelter-in-place is initiated, all adults immediately adopt a unified posture:
Calm, grounded presence
Low, steady voice
Minimal, intentional language
Confident, unhurried movement
Consistent adult response across the academy
Children take emotional cues from the adults who guide them. Our steadiness is their safety.
Immediate Procedures
Upon notification:
Exterior doors are secured
Children remain in their current atelier
Windows and blinds are adjusted as appropriate
Attendance is quietly verified
Activity transitions to calm, familiar work
Guidance Within the Atelier
During shelter-in-place, children may continue with independent or small-group work, listen to a story, engage in quiet table or floor activities, or rest and observe calmly.
Adults may say:
“We’re staying inside together for a little while.”
“You’re safe. I’m right here.”
No further explanation is offered unless developmentally appropriate and necessary.
Emotional Safeguards for Children
We intentionally preserve familiar adults, familiar materials, and familiar rhythms. Children are never isolated, questioned, or exposed to adult concern.
If a child expresses worry, the feeling is acknowledged calmly, safety and presence are reassured, and attention is gently redirected to grounding activity.
Child Emergency Continuity Kits
As part of our preparedness practices, each child maintains a small, discreet Emergency Continuity Kit at the academy.
These provisions allow us to support children calmly and comfortably should we remain indoors for an extended period.
Each kit typically includes:
Water
Non-perishable nourishment appropriate to the child
A change of clothing
Any necessary medications (as documented)
Developmentally appropriate care items, as needed
Families are guided annually on updates, and all materials are stored securely and respectfully on-site.
Communication With Families
Families are notified once stability is established, using calm, factual language. Communication includes confirmation that children are safe, a brief explanation that shelter-in-place was enacted, reassurance that procedures were followed, and clear guidance regarding dismissal or continuation of the day.
Real-time communication is reserved for circumstances that require it.
Duration & Resolution
Shelter-in-place remains in effect until clearance is given by administration or appropriate authorities. When lifted, transitions occur gradually. No dramatic announcements are made. The day continues with steadiness and care.
Children are not asked to process the event unless they initiate.
Documentation & Review
Following any shelter-in-place, time and duration are documented, attendance is verified, communication records are archived, and procedures are reviewed internally for refinement. This process is administrative and never shared with children.
Our Commitment
At Prime Montessori Academy, safety is upheld without fear, urgency, or disruption to the child’s inner world.
Preparedness allows calm.
Calm preserves trust.
Trust protects childhood.

Children are never informed of danger. They experience continuity, protection, and steady adult presence.
There is no running. There are no raised voices. There is no discussion of cause within earshot of children.
Items are selected to preserve familiarity, comfort, and dignity — never fear.
